CANADIAN ORGANIC MATTRESS MANUFACTURERS (SOME WILL SHIP TO THE US)
These guys have been around since 1985and really know what they are doing. They do take special orders (or they did as of 9 months ago) so if you have particular sensitivities they have the ability to accommodate. I’ve ordered several mattresses (including organic crib mattresses) from them in the past and they were all beautiful and everything that I expected. As well as the natural latex, they do make the traditional organic box spring mattress, which is my personal preference, and I’ve had several made without wool due to allergies. Having said that they have changed a few things in their product line and I’m not sure if they hand tuft their mattresses any more. All products are made from organic cotton and wool. They also make organic cotton comforters, organic cotton mattress pads, organic cotton pillows, organic crib mattresses, organic sheets and organic cotton mattress protectors. They’re located in Ottawa but will ship anywhere for an extra charge.
The basic principles of Green Sleep is their Natural Rubber mattresses which are manufactured from their own trees in North Malaysia. They state that no latex or synthetic fillers are used in their production. As with any mattress you’re considering purchacing I recommend asking them to send you a sample of material used in their beds ie. a small chunk of the natural rubber, a tuft of wool and even a swatch of their organic cotton. Smell the samples and place them on your skin for a reasonable length of time to be sure that you don’t have a sensitivity.
Natura provides a variety of mattress options, some natural and some not so natural. I really like the concept and marketing of this company but note the majority of their mattresses contain Talalay latex. Many people have absolutely no sensitivity to Talalay latex but there are certainly some people who simply can’t tolerate its smell (I’m one of those people). They have several organic baby mattresses but the one that I recommend has only Coir, Organic Wool and Natural latex, all quite acceptable materials, though my personal preference is always without latex. I would make sure, however, that your baby doesn’t have wool sensitivities first and I’d ask to have a sample of the natural latex sent to you before you purchase. The natural latex should only have a small odor if any at all and the smell certainly should not last longer than a week out of its package.
Integrity can sometimes be difficult to find in a mattress company but that’s certainly not the case with Hästens. This company is all class and all natural. I absolutely love their traditional and natural materials and construction methods: cotton, wool, flax, solid pine, steel, down and horsehair (a traditional material used in mattresses for hundreds of years – even the Queen of England has horsehair in her bed). The sheer fact that they’ve been making mattresses since 1852 certainly gives one an entirely different perspective on natural sleep and healthy mattresses. Their mattresses are comfortable and extremely well built and should last up to 30 years; Hästens mattresses are an investment that you certainly will not regret.
Hästens is a supplier to the to the Swedish Royal Court.
Wool, wool, and more wool. This is a beautifully made futon-like wool mattress to be place on a slate frame. If you are not allergic to wool and you like a fairly firm mattress that breathes well this may be your best bet.

If you have any concerns over your back , hip, joints or pressure points anywhere on your body a natural memory-foam mattress is the absolute best option and Essentia is the only manufacturer worldwide that produces a non-toxic memory-foam mattress. when I was pregnant and had to sleep on my side there was no way I was able to sleep on a tradional box-spring because it was simply too hard. To be perfectly honest, I’ve never actually ordered anything from these guys so I can’t tell you from personal experiece how their product fares. After having a good mooch around their website and reading all the reviews the company looks reputable. I did notice however that there ‘s quite a large lead time when ordering a mattress which means you’ll have to wait a few months before you’re sleeping organic!
They specialize in only baby organic mattresses. Naturepedic is considered one of the best if not the best supplier of organic crib mattresses, organic bassinet mattresses, organic cradle mattresses, organic portacrib mattresses, organic change pads, organic mattress pads, and organic toppers in the US.
Naturepedic has the endorsement of Healthy Child Healthy World , a well respected and industry leader in health for babies and children (I continously refer to their website for up-to-date information on toxins that could be harming your children. If you are a parent or are soon to become one I implore you to add this site to your daily must-reads – absolutley invaluable! ).
At any rate, back to organic baby mattresses, despite Naturepedic being endorsed by several reputable sources I do have my personal concerns over their products. There are two aspects of their mattresses that have lead me not to purchase them for myself nor for any of my clients of my Green Architectural & Interior Design Firm…They are:
First - Their fire retardant materials of baking soda, hydrated silica and cellulose fiber. I feel all these materials quite simply do not belong in an organic crib mattress, as they are far from being pure, natural or organic. Simple organic wool is, in my opinion, the best fire-retardant mother nature can produce. Concerned over wool allergies? I too am highly allergic to all wool even organic however wool encased in a mattress and protected by sheets and a mattress pad has never effected me in the slightest or my sensitive children. The best option for you is to get a sample of the wool sent to you and test it out for yourself! If wool is not a concern for you then these mattresses should be ruled out.
Second – The food-grade polyethylene that coats the outside of the mattress to make it waterproof. This coating instantly sets off alarm bells in my head. I don’t care how many studies have show its inert properties, I personally will not have anything synthetic near a baby’s sleeping environment. Do your own research and decide for yourself, you may be quite comfortable with your findings but this is my feeling on the matter, when it comes to babies I take no risks and traditional classic all natural materials such as wool, organic cotton, wood and steel will always be my first choice.
A Hundred year old company from NY with an impressive pedigree and history. If you’re not from the East than getting your hands on one may be slightly awkward, certainly not impossible but they don’t offer direct purchase from their website or free shipping. The best would be to get hold of them directly, they seem like that type of personal company. The absolute best mattress, in my opinion, is The 1915 Collection - see specifications below -WOW impressive ingredients!
Covered in a 100% organic cotton chambray cotton, which has been gently massaged for softness
Mostly futon-like beds, very reputable, and an unbelievable price point. If you’re looking for all natural and budget is your second name, then these guys are your best bet. I wouldn’t say they’re the softest mattress around but they really make the effort to produce a chemical-free all-organic bed. Their website is painfully out of date but it’s worth the frustration when you see the low cost of these mattresses. They also supply several other retailers across the US that may offer a better ordering option.
This is a real earth company that produces mattresses which are basic but effective and they manufacture some very unique mattresses that I’ve never seen anywhere else.
My preferred is the special horsehair mattress, it is latex free consisting of 10 layers of horsehair (1000gr per layer!). It’s a robust, harder mattress but with wonderful ingredients.
The organic wool futon is very unique as well, made from 3 layers of organic wool, it’s a traditional firm futon.
They also sell organic cot mattresses, organic fitted cot sheets, and organic cot mattress protectors.
All their futons are hand made and take 4-6 weeks to be delivered. (UK only)
*Note – they also sell some other very unique products and raw materials that you could use to make your own organic pillow, organic bedding and the like: cotton string, hemp waxed string, hemp beading yarn, organic millet husks, organic spelt husks, woolballs, horsehair, natural kapok.
