I am completely smitten by this amazing vibrant collection of 100% organic cotton bedding by Amy Butler – she is amazing. And when I say bedding I mean it all – Shams, 400 thread count sheets, Euro Shams, Boudoir pillows (seen below), bed skirts, coverlets and decorative pillows. She uses low-impact dyes that retain their colour, the prices are unbelievably low for the quality and the level of design. This is the whole package folks -Laura Ashley eat your heart out!
This particular collection (one of several to choose from in a plethora eye popping colours) is called “The Dancing Paisley”. She say it’s “combinations of graceful, fresh paisleys, dainty flowers and large waving leaves in emerald, lime & turquoise that feels like the softest wind blowing through the garden.”
This amazing Amy Butler Queen Duvet is only $99 US.

CANADIAN ORGANIC MATTRESS MANUFACTURERS (SOME WILL SHIP TO THE US)
These guys have been around since 1985and really know what they are doing. They do take special orders (or they did as of 9 months ago) so if you have particular sensitivities they have the ability to accommodate. I’ve ordered several mattresses (including organic crib mattresses) from them in the past and they were all beautiful and everything that I expected. As well as the natural latex, they do make Read more
Searching for an organic cotton mattress pad or cover or an organic wool mattress pad?
If you are then I don’t need to dwell on the reasons for your quest, all I will say is that you’re on the right track and keeping anything synthetic or petrochemical based out of your bed is critical.
The best mattress cover for dust mites is a very tight weave organic cotton mattresses cover that completely encases the mattress. If you are searching for a waterproof mattress pad then organic wool wrapped in tightly woven organic cotton is your absolute best option.
Good organic mattress pads are actually hard to find in Canada, and for what is a fairly simple product

Shocking isn’t it? This is in your bed right now – a dust mite!!!
With the bed bug scare so rampant it got me thinking again (as I went through this last year) that I really should be protecting my mattress. I’ve spent a fortune over the years on organic cotton sheets, all the things that touch the skin and look oh so pretty every morning after I make the bed but then again in shambles after my two rascals get in it. I’ve always put off buying a mattress protector mainly because of the cost and I also thought it was not absolutely necessary since I do have an organic cotton mattress and a mattress pad. Lately however I’ve been waking up a bit stuffy and my eyes slightly puffy and a bit sore. I’ve been putting it down to shear tiredness (being a mom of 2 boys) but I’ve just finished reading the symptoms of dust mites in your bed and they match my symptoms to the letter!!
Dust Mites – the low down.
Dust mites are invisible to the naked eye but there are millions of them living in your mattress and pillows, stuffed animals, clothing, blankets. If not attended to they can contribute greatly to asthma.
Solutions for Dust Mites:
Wash all bedding every 3 to 7 days in the hottest possible water and use a mattress cover and pillow case covers.
Choosing a Mattress Cover:
Choose a mattress cover that has a mean pore size of less than 6 microns, I would aim however for something between Read more
In my opinion there are only 2 reputable organic crib mattress manufacturers in Canada and the US. I’ve ordered from both manufacturers for my family and for several clients of my Architectural and Interior Design Firm. I have sent numerous organic crib mattresses back to other manufacturers over the years in complete disgust at the quality and toxic smells emitting from the mattress itself and the packaging it was sent in. When it comes to babies there can be no compromises and no second guessing, they must be sleeping on the best non toxic crib mattress money can buy. I always advise my clients to allocate the majority of their baby budget on an organic baby crib mattress rather than on decorations and frills for their baby’s room. People often tell me that they can’t afford an organic mattress yet they’ve spent hundreds of dollars on pillows, bumpers, stuffed toys, and shelves packed with ornaments that the baby will never appreciate until they have grown up and left home!
If you’re pregnant or expecting to be soon it can be very overwhelming and frustrating to know what to buy for your new little one. I always tell my clients when they’re purchasing for the nursery to keep it as minimal and as simple as possible. Don’t pack it full of stuff and don’t put anything in there that wasn’t around when your grandmother was a baby. That is to say if there are any petrochemicals in it don’t buy it! Simple ingredients such as… Read more

Talalay is a type of manufacturing process that works with the natural liquid from rubber trees. Natural latex or non synthetic latex contains no petrochemicals and is often processed using the Talalay method, a method that is more advanced than the traditional Dunlop method. Talalay latex is poured and then the mold is sealed and flash-frozen to stabilize. It has consistent cell structure throughout, making it softer than Dunlop but more expensive. It also typically uses less toxic glues at the seams.
Now there’s lots of information about “natural latex” out there, and lots of contention over how pure the latex really is and how good the processing method is. I have no doubt that most is quite pure but if you’re looking for an organic mattress I always say simple is best: simple materials, simple construction. It is true that this type of mattress is relatively natural compared to your average mattress sold in big box retailers however it is still highly processed – you decide – do you want to eat an organic apple straight from the tree or processed organic apple sauce from a plastic cup?
*Natural latex rubber is coagulated elastic latex which comes from the milky liquid of the rubber trees of South East Asia.

Do we ever really think about what’s inside our bed?
Not often and mostly never, yet we spend more intimate time with our mattress then any other piece of furniture, clothing, or vehicle.
What is actually under the plush cotton hood of your mattress might surprise and even shock you. Ok we do have an idea, “springs and foam”, but what really is foam? What’s on and around it? What are those “new” smells coming from mattresses? What are steal spring coils and what Read more
Mattresses are a big purchase and one that you don’t want to have to make too often. A good friend of my mother’s purchased a new conventional (non-organic) mattress over a month ago now. It was a top of the line latex mattress for around $4000.00. It all sounded quite decadent with its multi layers of foams – like buying a layered sponge cake. Gail had been suffering from lower back and hip pain, restless sleep – waking up in the middle of the night for no apparent reason and finding it very difficult to fall back asleep – and a general lack of energy. She decided, and rightly so, that her 12 year old mattress needed to be replaced, that it was likely contributing to her growing health concerns. It was time to make an investment in her health and happiness.
I went to visit her about 2 weeks after she had received her new mattress; Read more
Cost and Size
Are you choosing a mattress to sleep on for a year while at school, are you a couple purchasing your first mattress or are you a seasoned mattress buyer? Cost plays a major part in all cases. If you plan to be sleeping on your bed regularly for more than a year you are then looking at more of an investment purchase, one that’s worth spending slightly more on to get good quality that will last and give you the rest you deserve. If you are a couple, a major decision is Read more
